"Well no, Patchpaw, it wasn't easy at all. There was some confusion at first, and friends went to different Clans, separated forever by the warrior code. Some didn't like that, couldn't see why StarClan would force them to do that, even though StarClan was just helping to make things as simple as possible. Let me tell you a story..."
After Dawnstar, Miststar, and Shadowstar had their dream, they went out into Haven to begin StarClan's work. It wasn't easy; cats didn't know which leader to follow. Should they go where their friends were going, or go to the part of the island they liked best, or follow the leader who they felt had the best qualities? It was a mess, but the first leaders handled it very well.
However, some cats didn't want to be in a Clan at all, they-"
"Wait, why wouldn't a cat want to be in a Clan?!"
"Well, Patchpaw, I was trying to get to that part before you interrupted, so just sit and listen..Ahem"
Some cats didn't want to be a part of a Clan. They didn't want a life with rules, a life with structure... they fought back, hard. But the Clan cats, with StarClan on their side, fought back harder. It was a bloody war, one that lasted many moons. On the side of the Clan cats, this war helped to solidify the loyalty of the cats to their brave leaders, and working in a harmony that the rogues did not have, they slowly pushed the loners up north, all the way out onto the beach, then out further. The tide was out during the battle, but as the feud went on, the tide came in. The rogues ran in panic, and found land in an island just a ways north of ours, though it is much smaller we hear. One can only imagine the chaos and bitterness they live in. The Clan cats ran back inland, and eventually settled into their respected territories.
Dawnstar and her Clan took the territory to the East, and named her Clan SunClan, because her side of the island was the side that the great sun rises on.
Shadowstar and her Clan took the territory to the West, and named her Clan NightClan, as it is the side of the island the sun sets on, and after which the moon rises.
Miststar and her Clan took the territory to the South, naming her Clan RainClan as after a heavy rain, water falls for a long time off the mighty trees that occupy their territory, so it appears to rain long after the sky has cleared.
