The mouse looked up.
Doe sprang.
It was a quick chase and a quicker kill. Leaf-bare had been hard on all and it showed in the rodent. It would hardly be a mouthful, but Doe wasn’t deterred; everything she’d eaten recently had left her wanting. Besides, the gesture was the important part.
The she-cat lifted her prey with its tail in her teeth and turned her paws deeper into the forest. She’d spoken with a lot of cats lately and what they had to say was leading her to seek out a cat said to frequent this area. Though nothing said had convinced her this cat would accept her offer, she was in no place to be choosey. But her uncertainty convinced Doe to catch a gift; no sane cat would turn down free food, even such a pathetic scrap as the one swinging in her jaws. And if it was all for naught, what had she lost? A mouthful and some time? She would survive.
She always survived.
With the last of the snow having melted half a moon ago, Doe’s light-colored pelt stuck out amongst the forest greens and browns. Good. She had no intention of sneaking up on any cat and giving the wrong impression. She happily stepped on twigs and disturbed the leafy debris under her paw, keeping a scarred ear pricked for noises that weren’t hers. There was no guarantee the cat she would come across was the one she sought.
