there was something about the way that the trees wept after a storm that sang to her tender side. a barrage of thunder, and lightning, the heaven’s opening up to unleash their wrath upon the territory of rain. the scent of the rain slicked leaves enveloped her senses and created a tranquil environment for her to clear her thoughts. even the journey to the forest was blissfully comforting and calming. wind swept plateaus that carried the scent of sweet grass brought a serenity to the entire territory. lichenstrike couldn’t remember the last time she had taken the initiative to escape from the everyday drama of living in a clan where half the cats didn’t even like her. it was only emphasized by the fact that she was having her name slandered by her siblings. not to mention the fact that she had been publicly chastised by fawnstar in front of her deputy and other warriors who had joined the patrol. she knew that she should be over it by now, but there was just something about the way that the cats had looked at her that made her blood boil and her heart pound in her chest incessantly.
that’s what brought the she-cat to maneuver her way through the dense forest, the tears of the sky falling from the leaves and landing on the ground in a last ditch attempt to nourish the earth. it seemed to be working, due to the thick, rich green undergrowth that caressed her pelt and tickled her skin as she stepped lightly through the forest. lichenstrike felt a smile lighten her features, the first genuine smile that had appeared on her fact in as long as she could remember. this was her sanctuary, her home away from home, where none of the clan drama could reach her, and cause her any grief. she wasn’t sure what she would do out in the thicket, but she was just happy to be there. she stopped in her tracks and felt the moisture slicked moss retract under the weight of her body and she closed her eyes. the large tabby she-cat felt so small among the monstrous trees that adorned this section of territory. these trees were a sentiment of the strength of the clan, that no matter what happened, the clan would survive everything that was thrown at it.
opening her pale green pools, she turned her gaze up to the foliage that hid the sky from her view. she had barely noticed how dark it was, but it gave her a feeling of freedom. but just as soon as it came, it floated away, replaced with grief and anger. the grief was for the mother she never met, who had given her life so that her kits could live theirs. the anger was for her father, who wouldn’t even take a moment out of his day to look upon his three strong, healthy kits who were now all providers for the clan. he didn’t even care that he had kin, olivestep’s kits who were now young warriors. a feeling of guilt threatened to bubble up. she didn’t bother to get to know her nieces and nephews, she could hardly remember their names. forcing the thought out of her mind, she took a deep breath in, and let it out slowly. this wasn’t the reason for coming out here, she didn’t want to think about these things, she didn’t want to feel all of these feelings. shaking her head, she continued on her way, her tail flicking behind her with aggravation and contempt for her dysfunctional family.
Now the dark begins to rise
