[Kestreltalon][Foxtail] He had no idea why he was out here.
Kestreltalon stared blankly at the plant -- more like weed -- in front of him. Not only did it look sick, it smelled nasty. And Foxtail wanted him to chew it by the roots to dig it up?
"Well, c'mon," the medicine cat said in between digging up his own stalks. "This burdock root isn't gonna walk itself to my den."
Kestreltalon shook himself and did as he was told, grimacing as the smell and taste of the herb coursed through his senses. "So, uh... No apprentices wanted to come herb hunting? Not that I mind helping you, or anything..."
"An extra set of paws is always helpful," Foxtail said as he frowned at a particular stubborn root. After a hiss of frustration, he yanked it out of the ground. "Most apprentices are busy with their mentors anyhow."
Kestreltalon nodded. "Right... What about you? Did you have any battle training, Foxtail?"
"Of course I did," the other tom said. "I need to know how to defend myself too, don't I?"
With a quiet, "Oh. Makes sense," Kestreltalon went back to digging up his burdock root.

The gusts around the cliffs were a bad sign for a hunting patrol. No prey would be out in the wind when it could be sheltered closer inland. Though technically on a hunting patrol himself, Spottednose didn’t let it worry him. The other cats in his patrol had already caught prey before they decided to hunt separately, so the patrol wouldn’t come back empty-pawed. Besides, he hadn’t come just to hunt; he also wanted to check in on Foxtail and Kestreltalon. There was little danger here, but he wanted to be sure the warrior and medicine cat were safe and didn’t need extra paws. Sure, the apprentices needed to train their battle and hunting skills, but helping the medicine cat was an important duty too.
Though the wind made it harder to pick up the scent, he managed to find the toms. They seemed to be busy gathering herbs. As he got closer, he recognized the plant as burdock. The cats appeared to be digging at the roots, which were for… bellyaches? No, nursing queens. StarClan above it was a good thing he had never tried to walk Foxtail’s path!
Meowing a greeting to the warrior and medicine cat, he cocked his head at Kestreltalon’s progress. The exposed part of the roots nearly blended with the dirt. “Hope I never need to eat that,” he joked. “How are things going, Foxtail? Are you finding what you need?”
